We leave you tonight, this Christmas Eve, with a news story out of Augusta, Maine, where Democracy for America members delivered 50,000 minutes worth of prepaid phone cards to Camp Keyes and the Veterans Affairs center at Togus.
The group delivered 200 cards worth $5 each to Camp Keyes on Thursday to be shipped to troops in Iraq. An additional 40 cards donated by the Hancock County Democratic Committee will be go to troops' family members in Maine.
Another 100 cards went to veterans at Togus.
Democracy for America member Alison Smith, of Portland, said the fund-raiser started as a national project on Nov. 23 with the collection of donations to purchase more than 100,000 minutes worth of cards for veterans.
The organization matched the donations to provide 200,000 minutes worth of cards for patients in veterans hospitals in California, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont and Washington.
This is your generosity in action. Democracy for America headquarters distributed the phone cards and matching minutes that you sent to Burlington, VT to this Maine DFA group. They, in turn, were able to encourage their own members to raise another $1,000 within 24 hours. It's your ability to focus this community's energy for the benefit of all that continues to amaze and inspire us here at DFA headquarters.
Happy holidays from everyone at Democracy for America HQ to all of you. We appreciate everything that you do. |
