 DFACorps: Going Forward
Item submitted by Tara Liloia on Thu 23 Dec 2004 - 18:54 h

As hundreds of thousands of calling card minutes arrive in various states like Texas, California and Maine, we begin to wrap up our DFACorps Phone Cards for Veterans project. Dozens of groups—like the Eleanor & Franklin Roosevelt Club of Greenbelt, Maryland—pooled their funds and sent packages of calling cards by the dozen. Everyone at DFA Headquarters was thrilled to see the collection box overflow onto a nearby desk.

And the Veteran's Hospitals were also excited to receive our surprise donations. One Voluntary Services coordinator exclaimed to DFA Headquarters, "I usually have to buy these phone cards myself -- this is a great help to us!" Thank you for your generosity and for mobilizing quickly to get these free minutes to veterans before the holidays. Our gesture of gratitude to our servicepeople has led the way for Senator Kerry as well as MoveOn to offer their own phone card collections this holiday season.

Now it's time for interested DFA supporters to look forward and plan our next DFACorps service project. Are you interested in baby quilts for needy infants? Volunteering at a food bank or homeless shelter? Working on behalf of victims of violence? Post your ideas for the future of DFACorps!

Cry of the Poor
"How can it be that even today there are still people dying of hunger? Condemned to illiteracy? Lacking the most basic medical care? Without a roof over their heads? . . .

"Christians must learn to make their act of faith in Christ by discerning His voice in the cry for help that rises from this world of poverty."
-- Pope John Paul II
