Cry of the Poor |
"How can it be that even today there are still people dying of hunger? Condemned to illiteracy? Lacking the most basic medical care? Without a roof over their heads? . . .
"Christians must learn to make their act of faith in Christ by discerning His voice in the cry for help that rises from this world of poverty."
-- Pope John Paul II
Novo Millennio Ineunte, no. 50

The recent controversy regarding Deal Hudson, editor of the conservative (not necessarily to be mistaken for "orthodox") Catholic publication Crisis, draws our attention once again to the question of the influence of the news media and other media. What a complicated and extremely important question it is. For now, I offer only some resources for your consideration.
Media Matters points out conservative bias in the news.
Accuracy in Media promotes the more familiar claim of liberal bias.
Annenberg Political Fact Check reveals falsehoods in political advertisements in an admirably balanced way.
Did you know the Church has been active in critiquing the media, in the more general sense?
Also check out Noam Chomsky's provacative discussion of the news media. |

Theodore Roosevelt |

"To announce that there should be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American people."
