Cry of the Poor
"How can it be that even today there are still people dying of hunger? Condemned to illiteracy? Lacking the most basic medical care? Without a roof over their heads? . . .

"Christians must learn to make their act of faith in Christ by discerning His voice in the cry for help that rises from this world of poverty."

Catholic(?) League Is At It Again!
Blog submitted by WilliamSB on Thu 12 Aug 2004 - 11:53 h
Apparently, the Jewish community is snoozing this election season; because William Donohue has run out of anti-Semitic material to publish in press releases.

I want to discuss William Donohue's latest un-Catholic assaults on people he doesn't know. But I want to come across as big and as important as William Donohue; so let me post my response like he posts his.

******************************

Catholics for Democracy -- NEWS RELEASE, 12 August 2004

Catholics for Democracy administrator -- oh, wait a minute, that's supposed to be an important title -- Administrator, William Burnett responded on August 12, 2004 to William Donohue's August 11 assault of catholicsforkerry04.org.:

"William Donohue brands his over-marketed organization, the 'Catholic League for Religious and Civil Liberties.' In the latest rounds of assaults on the character of people he does not really know, however, Mr. Donohue, once again, shows that he only supports liberty for those whose religious voice he personally agrees or identifies with.

"It is not enough that Mr. Donohue keeps picking on the Jewish community; because he does not identify with them. Or that he unjustly assaulted the reputation of John Kerry's religious advisor, Mara Vanderslice; because he does not identify with her. Or, even, that Mr. Donohue -- in his simpleton mind -- decided that Rev. Brenda Bartella Peterson, the DNC's Senior Religious Advisor, merited his vile venom; because he does not identify with her.

"Now William Donohue picks on a grassroots Catholic website! So much for promoting religious and civil liberties. We at Catholics for Democracy are jealous, though, that William Donohue did not feel we were important enough for him to pick on.

"Tim, another Catholics for Democracy Administrator (very important title, you know; almost as important as 'Catholic League President) have both corresponded with the creator of the website located at www.catholicsforkerry04.org. We found him to be a very sensible and affable guy; unlike a certain other individual I will not name in this public news release (but his initials are William Donohue).

"William Donohue suggests that it is hypocritical for the anticipated victor in this year's presidential race, John Kerry, to not condemn www.catholicsforkerry04.org. William Dononhue suggests it is hypocritical because Kerry's spokesman, Chad Clanton, issued a demand for the Bush team to condemn the book, Unfit for Command because it's co-author, Jerome R. Corsi, made offensive statements about different groups, including Catholics.

"And this is where William Donohue shows his true colors. He is not concerned, at all, about religious and civil liberties. He is concerned about promoting a radical, right-wing political agenda. And he does not care whose reputation he has to assault in order to achieve that agenda.

"His efforts are transparently duplicitous in this news release, though. For example, he says, 'It is important to note that it is not the position of the Catholic League that the Kerry camp should be held responsible for this group of wacko Catholics.' But then, immediately after, he says, 'But at the same time, it shows how hypocritical the operatives in the Kerry camp really are.' Which is it, Bill? Or are we just dealing with the ramblings of another incoherent and unthinking Busholic looking for an excuse to make a Kerry?

"The truth is that there would be no onus on the Kerry campaign to condemn www.catholicsforkerry04.org because there is no formal relationship between the campaign and that website. Condemning that website would be paramount to assaulting its freedom of speech. Kerry knows better.

"The same cannot be said for the relationship between the Bush campaign and the so-called Swiftboat Veterans for Truth.

"Further, Swiftboat Veterans for Truth was set up for one specific reason -- and one only -- and that is to propagate a very specific scandelous lie about John Kerry. www.catholicsforkerry04.org, on the other hand, was set up by independent, grassroots Catholic who just happens to support Kerry -- and he is honest about that support

"As far as I am concerned, Catholic League is a Political Action Committee. I suppose they -- and by they, of course, I mean William Donohue (the largest Catholic PAC for religious and civil liberties) -- can do or say whatever they want.

"But, as an organization that dares to call itself 'Catholic', it's about damn time William Donohue starts acting like a Catholic; instead of an unethical and manipulative political opportunist.

The Catholics For Bush group originally was trying to have a discussion with the Catholics for Kerry group members on their board. The administrator of the board decided that because we disagreed with Catholics voting for John Kerry, and we wanted to discuss only the wonderful accolades about John Kerry, that we were obnoxious and couldn't continue to post there. We were censored. They were not nice to us. We did not call them names, we were polite as we are to anyone that has a discussion with us on our own board. They called us the "anti christ", evil, unamerican, Anti Catholic, backwards, selfish, unchristian, and a long list of other names. Instead of providing proof of their statements, they told us that the board was only for those Catholics that supported John Kerry. It turns out that most of the people on that board are either fallen away Catholics or not Catholics at all. I will give you one example, if you quoted the Catechism to them verbatim, they stated they didn't have to listen to it, yet when it suited them, they used the Death Penalty, and the War in Iraq as items the Pope apparently has written in stone somewhere that we are not allowed to support, but not in the CAthechism. This isn't even true. This is only one example. We were sad that our own Catholic brothers and sisters could be so angry at us, because we believe that our President is going on the right path. There is nothing obnoxious about following the Catechism, nor is there anything obnoxious about having a disagreement about which candidate would be better for Catholics to vote for. As a group, we also believe that the most fundamental issue of our faith is the protection of the innocent, especially infants. They only want to protect the ones that are living outside the womb, and were extremely insulting without any basis of fact stating that we didn't care about the living human beings in the world. (as if these people knew us for yrs) It is a sad day in our faith when the person who stands next to you in church on Sunday reciting the Lord's prayer, does not want to shake your hand in peace, because you are voting differently than they are.

"To announce that there should be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American people."
