Cry of the Poor |
"How can it be that even today there are still people dying of hunger? Condemned to illiteracy? Lacking the most basic medical care? Without a roof over their heads? . . .
"Christians must learn to make their act of faith in Christ by discerning His voice in the cry for help that rises from this world of poverty."
Pope John Paul II
Novo Millennio Ineunte, no. 50

Watching the comments in the "About us" post at the top of the home page, I wonder whether it is physically possible for Bush supporters and Kerry supporters to have any kind of productive dialogue, especially in such an anonymous setting. Always, in a forum like this with an audience, the best strategy is to refuse to respond to your partner's (rather, opponent's) attack but to instead counter-attack on a different topic. The objective is obviously not to understand the other side in any measure, but to do everything possible to "win" in the audience's eyes.
Do I think Catholics should be able to get beyond this? Yes. But it is a lot to ask given the political climate shaped by overly macho pundits, and given that I don't expect you to focus all your peacemaking energies on a quick comment at some website.
So, I have an idea to try to forge constructive dialogue out of the tendency for combative debate described above. I will start a blog topic on a specific political issue, and commenters will be able to trade salvos about Bush and Kerry's respective positions and records on that one issue. Any comments that stray from the issue at hand will simply be deleted by me after a short interval of time (during which you will be able to judge for yourself).
Let me know what you think of this idea, and please suggest issues to try in this way. |

Theodore Roosevelt |

"To announce that there should be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American people."
