Cry of the Poor
"How can it be that even today there are still people dying of hunger? Condemned to illiteracy? Lacking the most basic medical care? Without a roof over their heads? . . .

 A Definition of "Pro-Life"
Blog submitted by tsk70 on Mon 26 Jan 2004 - 15:14 h
Catholic Social Teaching says that in order to be "pro-life" one must oppose ALL violations of human life and the dignity thereof. This includes not just abortion, but also capital punishment, euthanasia, infanticide, and most wars. In 1992, Vatican Cardinal Fiorenzo Angelini stated that "among the individuals and groups against legalized abortion in the United States, there are some who support the continuation of capital punishment. This is an inconsistency and an unacceptable contradiction." In his 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae (Gospel of Life) Pope John Paul II said that our society is more and more tainted by a "culture of death," in which society has become indifferent toward human rights. In a January 27, 1999 mass in St. Louis, the Pontiff called for all Christians to be "unconditionally pro-life."

Applying the Church's teaching, it is obvious that George W. Bush is NOT pro-life. Even though Howard Dean does not oppose abortion, he is still more pro-life than Bush due to his opposition to the Iraq war and his partial opposition to capital punishment. So pay no attention to those claims that Howard Dean is not pro-life. Just say, "Well, he's more pro-life than Bush."

Finally! The correct definition of "Pro-life"

The pro-life movement is about much more than abortion. Thank you for pointing that out!

Until life is respect at all of it's stages-be the person a man on death row, an Iraqi soldier, or an elderly lady with a terminal illness. If life is not respected at those stages how can we expect people to respect the life of the unborn who are not even physically visible?

Another thing to consider is the environment. God gave us this planet so that we might live, and if we destroy it we are not showing respect for life because we are killing the very thing that God has given us to keep us and future generations alive.

John Kerry is not the best candidate ever in the pro-life movement. But he is in my mind not nearly as pro-death as Bush. I know he is the first step in moving towards a more pro-life country.

And that's why I will vote for him.

Dean is more pro-life than Bush? Huh?

Your argument that Dean is more pro-life than GWB is incredibly lame. You say that Dean is more pro-life than Bush because of his opposition to the Iraq war and his partial opposition to capital punishment. You want to attribute deaths to Bush. Ok lets see: Iraq war: less than 10,000, capital punishment: less than 100?, less than 1000? certainly no more than that. Would you say that if Bush had his way, abortion would be illegal. If so, millions, not hundreds or thousands, but MILLIONS of lives would be saved. If Dean had his way, Iraq would still be under Saddam's sadistic rule (talk about a culture of death), some capital punishment would take place, I guess, because according to you Dean is only partially opposed to the death penalty, and millions of innocents would continue to be slaughtered because Dean does not oppose abortion. According to you, this all adds up to Dean being more pro-life than Bush. This must be some kind of new math, because it doesn't add up for me.

another factor to add in

You forgot to add the millions dying from hunger each year. Take the thousands who died in Haiti last year because of the aid Bush has blocked--both U.S. aid and loans and grants from international organizations in which the U.S. has veto power. Bush's trade policies, refusal to cooperate with the international community, and utter lack of international credibility are propagating global hunger throughout the world. 24,000 die every day from the completely preventable cause of lack of food, and we're more concerned with gay marriage than trying to understand the root causes of hunger (especially when we are responsible for some of the root causes).

the popular "Pro-Life" is NOT Pro-Life
Comment added by Unregistered on Thu 29 Jan 2004 - 07:27 h
The term "Pro-Life" is put upon those in favor of strict legalized restriction of abortion. All those who are against such legislation are classified by this group as pro-abortion.

The use of these terms is an indication of the ignorance and the complete lack of integrity by those who use it, including George W. Bush.

I am opposed to legislation of any kind against abortion for the simple fact it is none of the Government's business. However, I am totally 100% opposed to abortion in most cases (very few exceptions). I believe prayer and education and wisdom is the way to fight abortion. God gave each one of us a free will and who am I or anyone else to take it away from them. Is Jerry Fallwell more omnipotent or more oniscent than Almighty God?

I am Pro-Life. I am in favor of God's gift of free will. I am opposed to capital punishment. Dr. Dean was in agreement with Pope John Paul II, who called the war in Iraq illegal and immoral. The Pope of the Catholic Church dtermined this war to be illegal & immoral. Who do you trust with moral decisions - Pope John Paul II or George W. Bush?

George Bush has spent his life in the public arena degrading life. He executed dozens of people while Gov. of Texas. He holds up funding for social program after social program, helping to keep the downtrodden downtrodden. He contributes to the destruction of the Earth's environment - the only planet we have. Maybe that's why he wants to go to Mars, he knows (or should know) the enviromnet on Earth is rapidly being destroyed. He then brings on war against a people and kills over 10,000 innocent civilians.

George W. Bush is Anti-Life and must be removed from office as soon as possible.

You are a lawyer, Mr. King. So, take any heinous crime of your choice, substitute if for "abortion" in these comments, and read them again. Sound pretty silly, don't they? Ah, but abortion is different, you say? You see, free will takes on a mysterious quality with respect to this issue that it does not possess with respect to any other matter that society deems fit to restrict by way of law. Now, if only someone could explain what that mysterious quality is... quick, someone call the Supreme Court!

Had to see it to believe it

My friend told me about this site and I had to see it to believe it. It's disheartening to see that people who supposedly share the same faith as I do, could possibly work toward supporting a man who is a supporter of abortion rights. Millions of women and children will be hurt if Dean or any of the Democrat leaders are elected. I will pray for you to open your mind and heart to a greater respect for all human life.

First of all, the adjective
Comment added by Unregistered on Wed 4 Feb 2004 - 08:29 h
First of all, the adjective is "Democratic". You mean the "Democratic leaders". Not the "Democrat leaders".

Second, I just hope you aren't going to vote for George W. Bush, who has killed an extraordinary number of people in wars, made fun of a Christian death row inmate asking for mercy, actually advocated torture (as a means of getting information from prisoners who were suspected terrorists), and hasn't done anything meaningful to reduce abortion rates. Not to mention all the other evil things he's done.

Third, Dennis Kucinich has a very consistent anti-abortion record *and* a solid record of support for Catholic principles of helping the poor.

I wish people would do their research. :-(
